OH Mondays

It was difficult to get out of bed the run Monday morning (as usual). I typically lay there for about 15 minutes debating in my head whether or not I need to run that morning. The debate almost always results in me getting my lazy butt out of bed and running. After my morning run I always feel so much better and ready to start the day. The decrease in temperature had made running much more appealing! I can't wait for fall and pumpkin everything!!
Here is the plan for the rest of the week:

Training Schedule
Monday: 3 miles
Tuesday: Stretch & Strengthen
Wednesday: 40 minute tempo run
Thursday: 4 miles + Strengthening
Friday: Rest
Saturday: 3 mile pace run
Sunday: Rest

Monday: Mercy Metric 10K

Meal Plan:
Monday: Burrito Bowls with guacamole
Tuesday: Turkey Burgers with grilled peppers and onions
Wednesday: Dinner with my grandma
Thursday: Slow Cooker Pepperocini Beef Sandwiches and a salad
Friday: ?
Saturday: ?

Sunday Fun Day

Our official anniversary was technically Sunday. We planned to bike on a bike path near our house but once we arrived we realized my bike had 2 flat tires and busted bike tubes!! Sad! So instead we decided to spend the day at Oktoberfest at Germania Park. They had a tug o war competition going on and one of our friends was partaking in the festivities. Our friend's team ended up taking 2nd place, not too shabby!! Before we left I made sure to enjoy a BIG pretzel.

I tried a new recipe for a pasta dish for dinner which turned out to be average.

The main event was dessert.

Following tradition we had the top tier of our wedding cake. D isn't particularly fond of regular cake so we served cheesecake at our wedding. We choose J. Annette's for our baker and couldn't have been more pleased with the outcome. J.Annette's didn't want us to have to eat a year old cheesecake so we were given a fresh 6" strawberry marbled cheesecake for our one year anniversary. I love this tradition! The only cake we had at our wedding was the cake that was shoved in our faces.

Haha!

For our anniversary D bought us tickets to see the Foo Fighters in Columbus! I can't wait, I have wanted to see the Foo Fighters forever! I love their new album!

Anniversary Appetizer

On Saturday D and I celebrated our one-year anniversary at Jean Robert’s Table in Cincinnati. One of our friends is a server there and has been recommending that we dine there for years! She was certainly right about the quality of the food and the pleasant atmosphere.

We started the night off with a bottle of Andre Tissot “Jr Table,” Cremant Du Jura, N/V, a sparkling wine which was delightfully delicious. The appetizer selection was remarkable; we had difficulty choosing just one. We finally decided to split the sweetbread. As we were waiting for our sweetbread to arrive we were given an adorable little basket of French bread, which was so yummy (I love bread!!). Our friend surprised us with additional appetizer ("anniversary appetizer") that was on special that evening, a tomato salad with whipped goat cheese topping. It was simple yet delicious. The whipped goat cheese really complimented the fresh tomatoes.

Shortly after we finished the tomato salad we received our sweetbread appetizer. The sweetbread is a cow thyroid gland seared in duck fat with mushroom, leak and blue cheese quiche, served with grape compote. This was probably to most unique dish I have tried! The flavors blended together so well and I loved the egg flavor of the quiche.
Once we finished our second appetizer our entrees arrived. D had the three little cochon (three little pigs) which was a mountain of pork belly, ribs and tenderloin. The meat was so tender and juicy. The pork was served with a medley of beans, country potatoes and blue cheese.

For my entrée I chose the Sole. Sole is a mild white fish it was served with a white truffle sauce, carrots, asparagus and thinly sliced potatoes. My dish was excellent! D and I usually choose a "dinner winner" (who had the better dish) but everything was so delectable we couldn't choose just one!

We finished the night with 2 desserts: the honey lime crème brulee and the milk chocolate macadamia nut tart. The crème brulee was phenomenal; it tasted like a rich key lime pie! The macadamia nut tart was also scrumptious it had a sweet chocolaty flavor with macadamia nuts scattered throughout, topped with a macadamia cream.

Our dinning experience at Jean Robert's Table was by far the best we have ever had! The food was superb from the appetizers to the dessert! The service was excellent; every one we encounter was friendly and personable. Our server spaced out each dish perfectly, the evening flowed so well. This was by far the most D and I have ever spent on a dinner but since it was our anniversary we felt the need to splurge a little. We would recommend this restaurant to friends and would return for another special occasion. I could not think of a better place to celebrate our one-year anniversary!!

Diamonds are a girls best friend!

Diamond Club of course! D and I were lucky enough to get these seat for the Cincinnati Reds vs. Washington Nationals baseball game last night! Diamond Club includes a buffet dinner, and in seat service, which provides all the food and drink you want! It’s like heaven! And view isn’t too bad either!

Hello Joey!
It was a goal of mine to eat and drink the value of our tickets ($450). I don’t think we even came close! But D tried one hot dog at a time…

We had a great time at the game! They won with a walk off home run in the bottom of the ninth! Diamond club seats are definitely the best seats at Great American Ballpark!

Finding Time to Train

At this point I am about half way through my half marathon training! I have been following Hal Higdon's intermediate half marathon training program. For my first half marathon this spring I followed the beginner program and I thought I could step it up a bit for my second half.
I thought it was going to be very difficult to find the time running with the weather being SO hot this summer. I am not typically a morning person and I really LOVE my sleep. Seriously at least 8 hours a night please!!! While training for my first half I ran after work. Since the weather was much cooler training end winter/ early spring I had the freedom to run at any time of the day. I have found my favorite running temperature to be around 50 degrees.
I quickly realized when I started training mid July with temperatures in the low 100s and unbelievable heat indexes that 5 o’clock pm was not going to be the best time for running. For the past six weeks I have been waking up about 6:45 am 4 days a week to run. BIG CHANGE for a sleep lover like me! It turns out that I really love morning runs! It’s so nice to be done first thing in the morning and have the rest of the day to work, cook, and hang out with D!
Yesterday I cheated (a little) and slept in until 8am (actually 8:03 when D called and woke me up!) When I got home from work I cooked dinner, let that settle a bit and then ran on the treadmill. It just wasn’t the same. This morning I got up and made sure to get my run in before work and I am already feeling much better about today!
Being a PTA I have the benefit of basically working in a gym, so later today I will do some lunges, planks, bridges, etc. followed by some stretching.
Tonight D and I have tickets for a sneak preview of Colombiana.
Totally not my thing but D LOVES movies and it’s free. It should be a nice cheap Thursday date night!

Welcome to my world!

About Me

The who ran away with the whaa…!? That’s right! I have decided to create a blog about the “culinary adventures” of a twenty- something newlywed who enjoys running and eating but doesn’t know that much about either.
I have been married for a year now and I thought it was time to share all of my failures and achievements in some of my new favorite hobbies!
I must admit that I do have some experience with running. I participated in 4 years of cross country and one season of track during high school. At the time I wasn’t terribly interested in running. I really enjoyed being part of a team and the running junk just happened to be a part of it.
I also met my wonderful husband (D) during our sophomore year of high school. We both decided (separately) to participate in track (only once) the same season. That could be why running holds such a special place in my heart. :)
Now that I’m in my twenties I have come to the realization that exercise and eating healthy are important! I have returned to the only exercise in which I have any knowledge (although slight!)* Over the past year I have participated in a couple 5ks/10ks and earlier this year I took on my first Half Marathon. Racing is the best part about running! It’s great to people watch and, to me, it doesn’t even feel like exercise! D will also agree to participate in 5ks because of the food, alcohol, and t-shirt that goes along with it. :)
Now on to the cooking! Growing up I was pretty spoiled! I was a VERY picky eater! I wouldn’t try anything new and would be satisfied with chicken nuggets or a cheese burger for dinner every night. I had never even tried Mexican food until I graduated from college and started my career, but now I can’t eat enough!
Being the youngest child and the only one at home for most of my life, I was catered to. My mom is an excellent cook and made dinner for us at least 5 nights a week. I loved having dinner with my family and still do! This is a tradition I carry on at home and hope to continue to when I have a family of my own.
I was never very helpful in the kitchen and I’m pretty sure my mom liked it that way. (I’m really messy! She would die if she saw what my kitchen looks like when I’m done cooking!!) So here I am 23 years old and married with no idea how to cook, clean or do laundry. Lucky for me my husband loves being my taste tester and will eat anything!
So here goes nothing…

*This is a blatant lie! I forgot to mention that I am a Physical Therapist Assistant, so I do know a thing or two about exercise! I guess what I should have said was running is the only sport that I really participated in at a higher level than junior high! I enjoy cardio a lot but weight lifting not as much. I do, however, make sure to do some strengthening for my arms, core and legs because it is very important to stay healthy during training!!
